The Mexican American singer also debuts a beachside music video for “My 45,” starring Xochitl Gomez
Cuco is ready to pay homage to the rich culture and soul music of Los Angeles on his new album. On Friday, the Mexican American star announced his album Ridin’, out May 9, as he shared the silly video for “My 45,” featuring Jean Carter.
“Get your seats buckled,” Cuco wrote under his album announcement.
The Cliqua-directed video shows Cuco performing from a beach parking lot before being approached by Xóchitl Gómez, who struts in with a loaded pistol. The actress poses with the weapon in her hand as Carter joins for his rap verse mid-song. They sing to a lady with comparisons to the trustworthy gun. “I got my 45/So we gon’ be alright,” sings Cuco. “We could hit streets/Or we could stay inside.”
At the end of the video, Gómez takes aim at a can sitting on a nervous Cuco’s head before realizing the gun isn’t so reliable. She then pulls out a minuscule gun to knock the can off of Cuco’s head.
Cuco’s album Ridin’ is set to feature influences of R&B, Chicano soul sounds, and psychedelia on the album produced by Tom Brenneck, who’s worked with the likes of Bruno Mars and Amy Winehouse. In its album artwork, Cuco can be seen photographed sitting on the trunk of a retro car, surrounded by a Chicano-inspired design of a heart-shaped chain link fence, tattoo-like roses, and an angel.
“Everybody listens to music when they’re driving. Music is part of your commute, whether you’re in a good or bad mood,” Cuco said in a press release. “You’re ridin’ through the motion of your life where nothing is linear. All of my songs here are romantic, whether that’s in a super-animated way or sad and heartbroken.”
This is Cuco’s first full-length project since 2022, when he released the trippy Fantasy Gateway, which saw him collaborate with Kacey Musgraves, Bratty, and DannyLux.
