It’s the end of an era.
Donatella Versace announced Thursday that she will be stepping down as creative director of Versace, with Dario Vitale set to helm the Italian fashion brand.
“Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me. I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes,” Versace, 69, wrote on Instagram.
She continued, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity.”
While she won’t be crafting the slinky clothing that the beloved brand has been known for since 1978, Donatella will be a looming presence, of course, by taking on a new title.
“In my new role as Chief Brand Ambassador, I will remain Versace’s most passionate supporter,” she stated. “Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.”
She wrote in a second post, “I hope I’ve made you proud so far 💜.”
Celebrities and fans alike expressed their love for Donatella, who took over the eponymous brand after her brother Gianni Versace was murdered in 1997 outside of his home in Miami.
“You are amazing ❤️,” wrote Penelope Cruz while Gigi Hadid said, “I love you so much! You have given us (the world) so much!”
Vitale, meanwhile, is relatively unknown by the public, however, the Italian designer is well versed in the industry. He has worked under Miucca Prada at Miu Miu since 2010 — which could also lend credence to the rumors that the Prada Group is looking to acquire Versace from Capri Holdings.
