Liberty avoid the worst with Jonquel Jones injury

The undefeated Liberty can exhale about the status of their star center.

Jonquel Jones has avoided a serious injury after going down with a right ankle issue in the team’s previous contest and has not been ruled out for their home game on Tuesday against the Sky.

The Liberty will see if Jones can return to limited activity on Monday.

Jones was injured in the first quarter of Thursday night’s 86-78 victory in Washington.

She rolled her right ankle on a play under the basket and received attention from trainers on the floor before being helped off the court. Jones was initially described as questionable to return to the game before the Liberty declared her out.

The 31-year-old, who was named MVP of the 2024 WNBA Finals, is averaging 13.9 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game this season while shooting 42.9 percent from 3-point range.

The Liberty (8-0) have a few options at center behind Jones.

Nyara Sabally, the team’s primary backup big, has missed the past six games due to a right knee injury, but head coach Sandy Brondello said Sabally could return for Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Sky.
Isabelle Harrison, the veteran forward who joined the team this winter as a free agent, has provided useful minutes off the bench.

And Breanna Stewart is capable of playing the 5 in small-ball lineups.
