Mark Consuelos Admits He Would Break His Own Saxophone In Middle School Because He Was So “Horrible” At Playing

Mark Consuelos may be great at co-hosting Live with Kelly and Mark, but a playing a particular musical instrument was not one of his strong suits.

On Friday’s episode, Consuelos competed in Live‘s signature “Stump Mark” game against viewer Paula Fox from Louisville, Kentucky. Fox provided the following two statements — one of which is true, and the other false — to try her hand at stumping Consuelos: “I can play the saxophone, the flute, and clarinet,” and “I rode in a limousine with Henry Winkler.”

After Consuelos was given a minute to ask Fox for more intel on her statements, he learned that Fox’s alleged favorite of the three instruments she played is the saxophone, to which he replied, “Saxophone, yeah, that one’s cool. I like that.”

Reminded that her husband and co-host once played, Kelly Ripa asked Consuelos, “Did you play the saxophone?”

Consuelos confirmed Ripa’s suspicion, explaining that he played the saxophone in “middle school band.”

“I was horrible,” he teased. “The reed instruments are very difficult.”

The two then recalled that their son played the trumpet, though Consuelos still had more to share from his band days.

“We would have band competitions where you’d have to go and play, and I would sometimes make my saxophone defective so it wouldn’t work,” he admitted.

Returning to the game at hand, Consuelos bested Fox, correctly guessing that she “rode in a limousine with Henry Winkler.”

“Usually you stick within the reed instruments,” he said of his reasoning for his guess. “Like if she said ‘saxophone, clarinet, oboe,’ I’d be like, ‘Perfect, she does all three.’ But to switch over to the flute is a little hard.”

Stunned, Ripa replied, “Really? You put that together from that.”

Consuelos reiterated that the flute is “different from all the other ones,” trying out his best impression of a flute player. However, Ripa offered up her own imitation, noting that you “blow with your top lip, and the bottom lip just rests there.”

“I think, I’ve seen it done,” she clarified.
