The Los Angeles Waves are getting a shot at redemption because Running Point is coming back for Season 2!
Just one week after the Kate Hudson and Mindy Kaling basketball team-up hit Netflix, the streaming service has given the green light for Kaling and the other writers to get to work on the second season. The news was announced Thursday in a video posted to social media featuring Hudson excitedly thanking the fans and teasing more to come.
“A good basketball team owner knows when to listen to the fans. So we hear you, and so did Netflix. Running Point is officially coming back for season two,” Hudson says in the clip, which also featured a flurry of fan messages begging for more of the fictional Gordon family. “Thank you so much to everyone who watched the show so far. I’m just beyond thrilled because you’re really the reason we’re able to come back and do another season.”
It’s not surprising that fans have been pushing so hard for a quick second season renewal, as Season 1 ended on a major cliffhanger. After nearly clenching a spot in the championship in her first year as team president, Isla (Hudson), her brothers, and the team watched in horror as they lost their most important game of the season by one point. The season also ends with Cam (Justin Theroux) returning from his rehab-fueled absence from the Waves to reclaim his spot as the president, much to the chagrin of Isla.
Season 2 will also have much to explore in the way of relationships and dynamics, especially after the reconciliation of Sandy (Drew Tarver) and Charlie (Scott Evans), a serious flirtation for Jackie (Fabrizio Guido) and Sofia (Marissa Reyes), and a surprise kiss between Isla and Jay (Jay Ellis). Will Isla pursue a new relationship with the Waves coach — who is slated to be moving across the country, by the way — or will she continue to try and salvage her relationship with Lev (Max Greenfield)? These are the questions we are dying for Season 2 to answer!
In February, Decider spoke with Ellis, Tarver, and Scott MacArthur about the freshman Netflix comedy and asked about the potential for a second season. At the time, the trio shared that everyone in the cast and the entire crew would love to return as there are so many more stories to tell in the world of the fictional Los Angeles Waves basketball team.
“We all hope there’s a Season 2, for sure,” said Ellis. “We’d be excited to work together again.”
“I think this world is built to run. It’s big, it’s expansive. For that reason, I think there’s a lot of storylines and emotional arcs that we get to follow in Season 1,” said MacArthur as Ellis added, “I think it could go as long as Netflix is willing to write the check.”
Let’s hope that’s true because we could watch this family for years and years to come. No date yet on when Season 2 will premiere, but we can only hope we’ll be back on the court soon.
