Sunny Hostin made it clear this morning that she isn’t playing nice with Republicans anymore. In fact, the co-host boldly proclaimed that the party is ruining America during a heated discussion on this morning’s episode of The View about Sen. Chuck Schumer’s divisive choice to back a G.O.P. spending bill to prevent a government shutdown.
While unpacking Schumer’s vote — which supported a bill cutting $13 billion in non-defense spending while boosting defense spending by about $6 billion, and giving more power to President Donald Trump and DOGE head Elon Musk for government spending — the panel got fired up. Hostin was vocal in her anger over the vote, and mentioned prominent democrats who shared her reaction.
“This was a fight that needed to happen, and it didn’t happen because of Chuck Schumer. If you think about it, Republicans would have had to own that government shutdown,” she said. “They have control of everything, and it would have been squarely on their backs.”
She then quoted Nancy Pelosi, who said the “false choice that some were buying instead of fighting is unacceptable,” and Anne Caprara, chief of staff for Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who said the divide in the Democratic party is between “those who want to fight and those who want to cave,” while calling for the party to unite.
“I want a party that doesn’t want to cave,” Hostin proclaimed. “I want a party that’s an opposition party, because what Schumer just did is, he cleared the way for Donald Trump and Elon Musk to gut social security, to cut Medicare, to cut Medicaid. That is unacceptable, and it is past time for Democrats to fight and stop acting like it’s business as usual!”
Alyssa Farah Griffin, who backed Schumer’s vote during this morning’s debate, asked Hostin how the government could hypothetically reopen if it shutdown and only Democrats had “to come to the table.”
Hostin, who sat stone-faced with her hands clasped, simply replied, “Let the Republicans do what Republicans do.”
Griffin pushed back, “Which is what, though?” but we’re pretty sure she didn’t like Hostin’s answer: “They’re destroying this country.”
