The stars aligned for a James Bond tribute performance at the 2025 Oscars.
Blackpink’s Lisa, Doja Cat, and Raye put on a show-stopping performance to honor longtime film producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who stepped down from their work on the franchise.
In their departure, Amazon MGM Studios signed an agreement agreed to take over, Variety reported in Feburary.
At Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony, Margaret Qualley — who has never been involved with the Bond movies — opened the show with a special dance performance before making way for Lisa, who gave a rendition of “Live and Let Die” by Wings and Paul McCartney.
Doja Cat followed with “Diamonds Are Forever,” the title song from the 1971 Bond film of the same name.
Raye performed her version of Adele’s “Skyfall” theme from the 2012 movie as the third tribute.
At the 2024 Governors Awards in November, Wilson, 83, and Broccoli, 64, received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for their work on the iconic films.
At the time of their departure, Wilson shared he was moving forward from the 60 years he spent working on the Bond films to “focus on art and charitable projects.”
“My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me,” Broccoli commented. “I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”
Since the first James Bond movie was released in 1962 the franchise has secured six Academy Award nominations for best song.
Wing and Paul McCartney’s 1973 song “Live and Let Die” from the identically titled Bond film was nominated in 1974 but failed to secure the prestigious award.
Cary Simon’s 1977 song “Nobody Does It Better” from “The Spy Who Loved Me” and Sheena Easton’s 1981 hit “For Your Eyes Only” from the similarly named movie were up for an Academy Award.
Both songs lost.
Luck for the franchise changed in 2013 when Adele secured an award for her hit track “Skyfall,” featured in the 2012 Bond movie of the same name.
Smith’s 2015 “Writing on the Wall” song from “Spectre” also won an award at the 2016 Oscars.
Lastly, Billie Eilish’s 2021 track “No Time to Die” picked up another award at the 2022 ceremony.
Over the years, several different actors have portrayed Bond, including Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, Sean Connery and Roger Moore.
