Will There Be An ‘Electric State 2’ Movie? What We Know About a Possible ‘Electric State’ Sequel

Critics may not like Netflix’s The Electric State movie, but that won’t stop The Electric State from becoming a smash hit for the streamer.

Directed by Marvel alums Anthony and Joe Russo, and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely—who adapted the screenplay from Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel of the same name—The Electric State stars Millie Bobby Brown as a teenager named Michelle. When Michelle finds out her long-lost brother might be a robot now, she sets out to find him, with the help of a black market salesman, Keats, played by Chris Pratt. Along the way, she discovers there is more to humanity’s war with the robots than appears on the surface.

No spoilers, but if you make to the end of the movie, you know that The Electric State ending raises the possibility of a sequel. So will there be an Electric State 2? Here’s what we know about a possible Electric State sequel.

Will there be an Electric State 2?

The short answer? We don’t know. Certainly, The Electric State ending leaves the door open for future stories in this franchise.

When asked about future Electric State movies in an interview with Filmhounds, directors Joe and Anthony Russo seemed open to the idea, but kept their answers vague.

“The audience has to tell us,” Joe Russo responded, when asked if the directors planned to return to this world. “We like building immersive worlds.”

Anthony Russo added audiences can get further immersed in The Electric State world via the upcoming mobile video game for Netflix Games, The Electric State: Kid Cosmo, which is a prequel that will explore more of Michelle’s backstory and her relationship with her brother Christopher, before the events of the movie. The Electric State: Kid Cosmo will be free to play for Netflix subscribers, and will be available on iOS and Android starting March 18.

“We’re releasing a game a few days after the movie, on Netflix Games, that is a very cool expression of the world as well,” Anthony Russo told Filmhounds. “So, as Joe’s saying, we love the world-building and we certainly designed this world in a way that we thought could be explored further. But, other than the movie and the game, we’ll see what happens.”

In other words, if The Electric State is a huge hit for Netflix, and the streamer wants to do a sequel, it sounds like the Russos would be on board. The harder part would likely be finding the time in the schedule for stars Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. Brown is currently in pre-production for two upcoming films, Enola Holmes 3 and The Girls I’ve Been, and will soon be on the press tour for Stranger Things 5. Pratt is in post- production on two films, Mercy and Way of the Warrior Kid. Not to mention, the Russos themselves have two upcoming Marvel projects on their plates: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

In other words, if Electric State 2 does get green lit, The Electric State 2 release date will be a long ways off. We think it would be at least 2027 before a sequel comes out—if it happens at all. But I think we can all agree, if they do make a sequel, it simply has to be called Electric State 2: Electric Boogaloo.
